To download an Instagram Reel, copy the link to the public Reel, paste it into Reels Downloader, preview the video, and save an available MP4. The steps are the same on a phone or a computer; only the place the file lands is different.
The short version
Reels Downloader works with Reels and posts that are publicly accessible. It cannot unlock private, restricted, or removed content.
Before you start
You need the link to one Instagram Reel, a browser, and enough free storage for the video. You do not need an Instagram account, an app, or a browser extension, and you should never type your Instagram password into a downloader.
Check three things before troubleshooting anything else:
- The link opens a single Reel. A profile, Explore, audio, or saved-collection page does not identify one video.
- The account is public. Reels from private accounts are only visible to approved followers, so a public downloader cannot reach them.
- You are allowed to save it. A public Reel is viewable, but that does not automatically grant permission to republish it.
How to download Instagram Reels step by step
The method starts in Instagram and ends in your browser's downloads list. Instagram moves its menus around between app versions, so if one option is missing, try the share icon and the ••• menu.
1. Copy the Reel link
Open the Reel so it fills the screen. Tap the share icon (the paper plane) and choose Copy link. If the share sheet only shows people and apps, scroll its bottom row or open the ••• menu instead. On the web, open the Reel on its own page and copy the address bar.
A Reel link looks like https://www.instagram.com/reel/ABC123xyz/.
The code after /reel/ is different for every video. Links that
start with /reels/, /p/, or /share/
work too.
2. Paste the link into Reels Downloader
Open the Reels downloader, paste the URL into the box, and select Download. The Paste button reads your clipboard when the browser allows it; otherwise long-press or right-click the box and paste manually.
Keep the page open while the Reel is checked, which usually takes a few seconds. For a quick reference to every control and status message, see the quick-start guide.
3. Preview and choose a quality
Press play on the preview to confirm it is the Reel you meant. When Instagram offers more than one rendition, each one is listed with its resolution, largest first, and an HD badge when it is at least 720 pixels on its shortest side. Below the video options you can also save the Reel's cover image.
The largest option is the best version Instagram serves for that Reel right now. It is not the creator's original upload, and it will not become 4K unless Instagram actually provides a 4K rendition.
4. Save the MP4
Select Download next to the quality you want. A smaller file is useful on a slow connection or when the clip needs to fit an upload limit. Your browser may save immediately, ask where to save, or show its download panel.
The video is passed through as Instagram delivers it: no re-encoding and no added watermark. Usernames, captions, or logos the creator burned into the video stay in the file.
How to save a Reel on iPhone or iPad
- Copy the Reel link in the Instagram app.
- Open Reels Downloader in Safari and paste the link.
- Choose a quality and tap Download, then confirm the prompt.
- Open the Files app and look in Downloads.
To move the video into Photos, open it in Files, tap the share button, and choose Save Video. Safari's downloads list (the arrow icon in the address bar) also opens the file. If nothing appears in Photos, check Files before downloading the same Reel again.
How to save a Reel on Android
- Copy the Reel link in the Instagram app.
- Open Reels Downloader in Chrome or another browser and paste it.
- Choose a quality and confirm the download if your browser asks.
- Open Downloads in your browser or the Files app.
Most Android browsers save to the Downloads folder, and the gallery app picks the video up once the phone indexes it. If the gallery has not refreshed yet, open the file from Downloads.
How to download Reels on Windows or Mac
Open the Reel on instagram.com and copy the address bar, or send the link from your phone to your computer. Paste it into Reels Downloader, pick a quality, and download. Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari all show the finished file in their download panel, usually saved to your Downloads folder.
For a carousel with several clips, Download all packages every item into one ZIP. Chrome and Edge let you choose where to save it; other browsers build the ZIP in memory first, which can take longer for long videos.
Quality, audio, and format
Instagram stores Reels at a limited set of resolutions, commonly up to 1080×1920. Pick the largest rendition when detail matters, or a smaller one when speed or storage matters more.
- Audio is included. Reels are delivered as one MP4 with the soundtrack already in it, so there is no separate audio file to merge.
- Muted music stays muted. If Instagram removed or muted a song for licensing reasons, the downloaded file reflects that.
- MP4 plays almost everywhere. The MP4 files Instagram serves open in the built-in players on iPhone, Android, Windows, and Mac.
- No added watermark means Reels Downloader adds no branding of its own; marks already in the video remain.
For photo posts and carousels, read the photo and carousel guide. To find the right link inside the app, see how to copy an Instagram Reel link.
Troubleshooting common problems
"That link is not from Instagram"
The pasted text is from another site, or it includes extra words around the
URL. Paste only the address, starting with instagram.com or
https://.
"No Reel or post in that link"
The link points at a profile, Explore, audio, or home page. Open the Reel itself and copy its link again.
"That Reel is private" or "Reel not found"
Open the link in a private browser window where you are not signed in. If Instagram asks you to log in or says the page is unavailable, the Reel is private, restricted, or deleted, and the downloader cannot reach it either.
The video opens instead of downloading
Some browsers play MP4s in a tab. Use the browser's download or save option, or long-press the video on mobile and choose to download it.
The download stops before it finishes
Retry on a stable connection and keep the tab open. Download links expire after a while, so if a lookup is old, run it again before downloading.
Privacy, copyright, and permission
Submit only public Reel links and never enter your Instagram password into a downloader. The privacy page explains what Reels Downloader receives and keeps, and the terms describe acceptable use.
Creators keep the rights to their Reels. Saving a copy to watch offline is different from posting it to a new audience. Ask for permission before reposting, credit the creator, and follow Instagram's terms and the law where you live. This guide is technical information, not legal advice.
Frequently asked questions
Can I download Reels from a private account?
No. Reels Downloader only works with public Reels and does not bypass login, follower, or other audience restrictions.
Does the creator get notified when I download a Reel?
Reels Downloader does not sign in to Instagram as you, so there is no account activity to notify anyone about. The lookup comes from the service's server, not your account.
Can I download Instagram Reels without an app?
Yes. Everything runs in your browser on iPhone, Android, Windows, and Mac. There is nothing to install.
Can I download the audio of a Reel only?
The tool saves the MP4 as Instagram delivers it, with audio included. To keep only the sound, open the MP4 in an audio editor or converter on your device.
Is downloading Instagram Reels legal?
It depends on the content, how you use it, the creator's permission, Instagram's terms, and local law. Public visibility is not the same as permission to copy or republish.
Ready to save a public Reel?
Copy the Reel link, check you have permission to keep it, and let Reels Downloader show the qualities Instagram currently provides.
